It's very handy if you're making many overseas calls to family or business contacts.

Email Signatures

Having an email signature is one of the cheapest and most effective marketing tools you can ever have. It’s the same as having a business card – but it’s electronic!

Your signature should contain information about you. Many professionals like to include their business contact information so that clients and business partners can reach them easily. Additionally, a signature might include a marketing message or even a favourite quotation to express humour or personal values. Just keep in mind that it's best to be as brief as possible. You don't want to annoy recipients with a signature that is overly long or distracting, especially recipients who get e-mail messages from you regularly.

Information in an e-mail signature might include:

  • Your name
  • Your title
  • Your physical business address and phone
  • Your e-mail address
  • Your Web address
  • A marketing message or favourite quotation
  • Your logo or photo
  • Your vCard attachment

Be sure to consider your audience carefully before you disclose any sensitive information such as your physical address and phone number. You don't want to get unexpected calls from strangers.

Wow, Spring has sprung ...

Greetings!

I have been a busy-bee lately!

Just got back from a week in Queensland attending the AIOP Summit where we discussed many issues concerning our industry and then headed off to the Sunshine Coast for a few days to visit a old school buddy who produces her own local magazine, The Montville Times. It was great to catch up.

Unfortunately at this time we received the news about Steve Irwin but fortunately I had the opportunity to visit Australia Zoo on Saturday 9 September 2006 to pay my respects to this wonderful environmental activist - it was very emotional to say the least.

On a happier note I was very honoured to be awarded the AIOP Presidents Award of Excellence and nominated for the National Award on Monday 18 September 2006. Very surprised I was! It was a great night with Sandi Givens as MC and special guest speaker, cricketing legend Max Walker.

Spring has sprung in Melbourne, Australia and it's just a wonderful time of year - I've just celebrated another birthday - and no, I'm not revealing which one ...

Enjoy ...!

Blogging - What on Earth is it?

Blogs. For those uninitiated with the ways of the Web, the word may sound like the name of the latest sci-fi creature. And while blogs are hardly considered biological entities, they have come to monstrous life online.

What Are Blogs?

Like most online creations, the exact definition of "blogs" is still very much in flux. At its very basic, blogs — or "Web logs" — are literally online diaries with articles, writings, photos, Web links or other entries made by the blogs' creators, or "bloggers."

The entries are typically listed in reverse chronological order where the most recent entry is on top and older "news" or musings can be found by scrolling down the Web page.

Most blogs allow readers to leave their own comments or links to topics and other Web sites relevant to the entry or the blog's topical focus. Typically, this interactive nature allows bloggers to refer to each other's blogs, creating so-called "blogospheres" — groups of blogs centered around specific themes, topics or interests.

What Kind of Blogs Are There?

Like the World Wide Web, blog types can run the gamut in terms of topics and styles.

The simplest are the text-only blogs created by individual Web surfers to post their own eclectic and varied thoughts. But others — such as political parties, religious and professional groups, businesses, and media organisations — have caught the blogging craze, too. Most often, these blogs contain various forms of multimedia content (digital videos, photos, audio) and postings that rival those found in traditional print or broadcast outlets.

The rapid pace of technology is changing the nature of blogs, too.

The popularity of digital audio players such as Apple's iPod has spurred the growth of blogs with audio content. Downloading these audio blogs — more commonly known as "podcasts" — is the equivalent of radio "on demand." Visitors can choose and download a wide range of audio files — including music, talk radio-like commentaries and lectures — and then listen to them at their convenience using a PC or a portable media player.

The rapid adoption in the United States of cell phones with built-in digital cameras and wireless Internet connections is also changing the face and pace of blogging, as well. Bloggers armed with these tools can snap a picture, write a short caption and then post it on a "moblog" or mobile log, regardless of time and place.

How Do You Get Started?

A simple search for "blogs" on any search engine will most likely turn up a slew of listings. Some of the popular ones are Blogger, Typepad, Fotolog and Wordpress. Visit the AKA Virtual PA Blog.
