Anytime is a good time to do a spring clean of your most valuable business tool - your PC (and laptop too). Here are some simple tasks you should do to keep your PC running smoothly and efficiently:
- Empty your Recycle Bin - located on your desktop, right click on the Recycle Bin and select Empty Recycle Bin. You'll be amazed at how full it gets.
- Get rid of Temporary Internet files. If you're using Internet Explorer go to Tools - Internet Options - General tab and Delete Temporary Internet Files.
- Delete or Archive your unused and old files - Don't clog up valuable space on your hard drive. Burn these files to a CD and store them in a safe and secure place or destroy them according to your confidentiality policy.
- Perform a Disk Cleanup - Go to Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup. This process will allow you to delete all your unused and unneeded files.
- Do a Disk Defrag - Follow the same steps as above but choose Disk Defragmenter under System Tools. Make sure that you have no programs running before stating this feature. It analyses and consolidates fragmented files and folders so that each occupies a single, contiguous space. The more fragmented the volume is, the slower your computer's performance will be. Doing this weekly will assist with the speed of your PC.
- Give your PC a physical clean. Use special screen wipes, clean the dust, lint and dirt out of your mouse and keyboard. Avoid use any harsh chemicals - a soft clean cloth will do the trick. Dust can cause fires and equipment to deteriorate.
Put a reminder in your Calendar or diary to do these maintenance tasks on a regular basis. |
Women's Network Australia |
Recently Women's Network Australia launched in Melbourne. Lynette Palmen, founder of the network, invited the new Melbourne members to breakfast so that she could meet us in person. She MCs all the events herself in each State (Qld, NSW and Vic) and makes a point of knowing all her members by name. I would highly recommend checking this network out.

| Winter has kicked in ...! |
Brrrr ... it is so cold here in Melbourne, Australia at the moment. A great time to snuggle up in front of the fire and do some catch-up reading - either a good book or a great ezine ...
Just recently the WWW was hit by yet another 'worm' which affected Yahoo's web email system. Called JS.Yamanner@m, a user merely has to open the email to cause it to run, which illustrates the need to keep your anti-virus up-to-date and sp*am filters on alert to these exploitations. I'm personally a big fan on VET antivirus - you don't even know it's there, but I know others love Nortons, McAfee and the free one from Grisoft. As you will read below, if you're using Outlook, you can set it up to delete sp*am before it hits your Inbox.
So in this issue we look at one of your most valuable assets, your PC.
Enjoy ...! |
| 5 Hints for Avoiding Junk Email |
If the very idea of wasting business time deleting junk email makes your blood boil, then it's time to take action to reduce the amount of sp*am you and your team are dealing with. These five tips won't make sp*am go away, but they can reduce the amount of downtime you spend attending to it.
- Activate junk mail filters. If the email system you use doesn't have built-in filters, then you should download a stand-alone junk mail filter or change e-mail clients.
- Reduce your exposure. If your company website includes an e-mail link, you're going to get junk mail. An alternative approach is to encourage site visitors to manually enter your email address and explain why you're doing it. If you submit your site to search engines, be selective and determine that they're reputable. Don't allow employees to post their business email addresses to newsgroups or other public websites.
- Never reply to spam. That's a sure-fire way to alert sp*ammers that they have an active email address.
- Be wary of HTML emails (but not this one!). These can contain web beacons or tracking codes that allow senders to log your email address and possibly other information once you've opened their mail.
- Use a dedicated e-mail account for Web transactions. If you purchase goods and services online or sign up for free email newsletters, consider using one of the free Web-based email services such as Hotmail for Web transactions. That way you can keep your real email address private.
How Junk Mail Filters Work
Microsoft Outlook 2003 (and earlier versions) comes loaded with powerful sp*am-fighting features including, among others, a junk mail filter. The filter evaluates whether a message should be treated as junk mail based on several factors, including when it was sent and the content and structure of the message. By default, the filter is set to a low setting to identify the most obvious spam. Any messages trapped by the filter are sent to a special Junk Mail folder that can be accessed at a later time. You have the option of setting the filter to be more aggressive, but you also run the risk of sending legitimate messages to the Junk Mail folder. However, these messages aren't lost; they're just not displayed in your inbox.
You can also configure Outlook to permanently delete junk mail messages as they come in. There may never be a time when junk mail is totally eradicated. But with the right software and some basic precautions, you should be able to significantly reduce business disruptions caused by sp*am. This information is provided by the Microsoft Australia Small Business Centre. PS. Also check with your domain host or ISP. You may already have a built in filter that you can use an adjust before they hit your Inbox. Anita.
